Students of the BHS Jazz Ensemble pose for a photo in front of the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C.

The Bayonne High School Jazz Ensemble recently finished a tour of four major US cities including Washington, D.C.; Baltimore, Maryland; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and New York City. Students performed in each city while also taking in the music, culture, and history of each city.

"The tour was simply amazing," stated the band's director, Serge Puchinsky, "the students were great and they were able to perform for many different audiences in each city." Puchinsky's highlight from the tour, however, was meeting and listening to trumpet player John Faddis. "We brought the kids to Blues Alley in D.C. to hear John Faddis perform and were able to meet and speak with him before the show. The students really enjoyed speaking with him; Mr. Faddis was very gracious and took the time to speak with all of the students about music and their experiences on tour." The band also had the opportunity to hear Sean Jones at Chris' Jazz Cafe in Philadelphia and Kyoko Oyobe, a Japanese jazz pianist, here at the world famous Blue Note jazz club.

While on tour the band also had a chance to check out the Smithsonian at the National Mall in D.C. as well as many of the amazing memorials including the Lincoln and Washington monuments, and the newer World War II Memorial which is also the sight of the band's 2013 concert performance  for the National Memorial Day Parade. The BHS Marching Band and music department has been selected to represent the state of New Jersey in the 2013 National Memorial Day Parade, but according to Puchinsky, other ensembles besides the Marching Band will have an opportunity to perform. "The parade performance scheduled for next year is only one part of the 2013 Memorial Day weekend." added Puchinsky, "Our concert ensembles will also have a chance to perform at the World War II Memorial in D.C. which is simply a breathtaking location - directly between the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument - it's going to be an amazing experience for these kids in 2013!"

The band will be continuing their spring tour here in Bayonne with several appearances throughout our community including several fund raising events and their own concert - which is a part of the high school's SLAM Music Festival, and takes place on Saturday, May 19th at 6:30 pm.
